Specttrum NewsShiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) President Avtar Singh Makkar gave a clarion call to the Sikh world to celebrate March 14 as Sikh Environment Day by taking green steps.


Avtar Singh Makkar said, “Sikhs around the world must plant trees and take concrete green action as a tribute to the nature loving Guru Har Rai on his coronation day (Gurgaddi Diwas).”


The young generation has a bigger responsibility so they must come forward to protect the planet for the generations to follow, he said at Ludhiana.


March 14 is the day when Guru Har Rai ji became the 7th Sikh. He was known to have deep sensitivity towards nature and the animal world.


SGPC President shared various environmental measures which SGPC has taken in Gurdwaras and land under SGPC which included installation of solar panels at Golden Temple; revival of Naulakha Garden, massive plantations at Damdama Sahib, Machhiwara and Fatehgarh University; fuel saving techniques at major langar halls; rainwater harvesting, distribution of plant saplings as Buta Prasad and various energy and water saving schemes around gurdwaras in Punjab.
