Specttrum News: Finance minister Arun Jaitley has promised to put all efforts to boost agriculture's share in India's economic output, terming revival of agriculture sector as top priority for the Modi government.


Jaitely said, "The concerns of the agriculture sector are high on the priority of the government. Despite the constraints of the economy, the government will try its best to boost this sector."


Leading agriculture experts asked the government to boost investment in the sector, upgrade farm technologies and issub bonds to fund incomplete irrigation projects. "Several experts made recommendations to improve the sector. Some of the points of the BJP manifesto came up for discussion. We listened to all the suggestions," he told to the visiting agriculture representatives. 

 

Minister of state for finance Nirmala Sitharaman and senior officials of the ministries of finance and agriculture were also present at the meeting, a finance ministry statement said.


"The BJP manifesto on agriculture is very comprehensive and it calls for greater investment," said agriculture scientist MS Swaminathan, who attended the two-hour meeting.
